Issue/Introduction

There are a large number of .tmp files in C:\Documents and Settings\protect\Local Settings\Temp\ on Windows or root/tmp directory on Linux on the Detection Server.

Note: If the DLP is installed on an Windows 2008 server or later the .tmp files would be located under C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp directory.

Resolution

There may be thousands of these files ranging in size from zero bytes and up. In some cases, individual files may be several GBs in size.

Accumulation of .tmp files in the temp folder (directory) may cause disk space exhaustion, which in turn may create performance issues until disk space is freed by file cleanup.

The files in question will have a format similar to:

2C36.tmp
415.tmp
4F65.tmp
6269.tmp
D715.tmp
DF58.tmp

or

kp2C36.tmp
kp415.tmp
kp4F65.tmp
kp6269.tmp
kpD715.tmp
kpDF58.tmp

Symptoms of this issue found in the Vontu logs:

  • ContentExtractionHost_FileReader.log shows numerous extraction errors
  • FileReader0.log shows a number of corrupt messages
  • VontuMonitor.log shows space issue and a number of exceptions

These files are left behind by Verity during the Content Extractor process.  This issue has been logged as a defect with Engineering and Verity.

If these files are more than an hour old, they should be manually deleted.
