Issue/Introduction

A backup taken from another SMG can be restored without changing the IP address and hostname of the new server. You need to know what what settings are preserved (not overwritten from the old settings) when restoring from a backup on another Symantec Messaging Gateway.

Environment

SMG - Control Center v 10.7.X, 10.8.X and 10.9.X

Resolution

The following settings are left and not overwritten by the settings in the backup:

• Hostname
• IP address
• Default gateway
• DNS
• Timezone and NTP servers
• Static Routes
• FIPS Mode status (the default setting is off)
  • FIPS Mode can be re-enabled after restoring a backup by following the steps in the is document: FIPS Mode is not retained when restoring a Symantec Messaging Gateway Scanner from a backup

These flexible restore features enables easier appliance migration and disaster recovery.

NOTE:

• License files are not saved in a backup. The Control Center must be licensed before you restore a backup, the license will not be ovewritten by the backup
• Message audit logs are not stored in a backup if the control center has the scanner components installed)
