Issue/Introduction

What is SepLiveUpdate.exe and how can it be used?

Resolution

SepLiveUpdate.exe is a small command-line utility that is included with the default installation of Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 12.1 and 14 clients. Launching SepLiveUpdate.exe starts a LiveUpdate session through the SEP client's built-in LiveUpdate Engine (LUE). This utility can be used to launch LiveUpdate Engine (LUE) sessions through a script or scheduled task in Windows.

Starting SepLiveUpdate from the desktop causes a command prompt window to open. When the session completes, the window closes without the need for user interaction. The utility can also be launched from the command line, or through a script. There are no command line switches or options available in the tool.

By default, SepLiveUpdate.exe is located in the following folder:

  • \Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\<build number>\Bin on 64-bit versions of Windows
  • \Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\<build number>Bin on 32-bit versions of Windows
  • C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection

With SEP 14.3 Ru5 and above

  • \Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\14.x \Bin64
  • \Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection
