When creating a report, there are options to bring in formatting information. However, this then leads to labels on the report graph being changed. How can I correct this?

This problem can occur when using a formatting template from other reports.
When you look at a report and click the edit icon (a pencil) to change colours, graph types etc. the labels for information are stored as part of that formatting. So when bringing in that format to a different report, or editing resources that report displays, it can appear that labels no longer appear correctly.
You can solve this by either editing the label information and re-saving the formatting or if major changes are required and the formatting is simple it can be faster to rebuild the report to reset any saved format information.
