How to apply the license for Fast Data Masker

Issue/Introduction

This document will explain how to:

  • Fill out a Customer Care Request form so that our CA licensing team can create a license key for you.
  • Apply the license for Fast Data Masker (FDM).


CA Test Data Manager (TDM) requires a compound license for Datamaker and all other components, including Fast Data Masker (FDM). You will be applying the same key you received for TDM, also known as Datamaker, for FDM’s license activation.

If you do not already have a TDM or FDM license, you can request one using a Customer Care Case Request form: https://catech.force.com/customer/CustomerCareForm 

When the request is processed, you will receive an activation key by email in the form of a text file. The key should be one long line of alphanumeric characters.

Environment

Fast Data Masker 4.0 and above. FDM can be purchased as a stand-alone product, so you might be more familiar with seeing FDM 4.X as the version, or you may know it as part of the TDM installation from version 3.1 and above.

Resolution

Create a license request case:

  1. Go to and login to CA Support Online: https://support.ca.com/irj/portal/newhome 
  2. In the top, left-hand corner of the screen, click the 'Menu' bar, which is an icon with three horizontal lines.

  3. Click on the 'Licensing' option.

  4. On the CA Licensing page, scroll to the very bottom and click on the 'Customer Care Request Form' link. 
  5. Fill out the following 'Account Information':
    • Please indicate your relationship with CA: (CA Customer, CA Employee, Other)
    • CA SiteID: If you do not know this, please call 1-800-225-5224 or contact CA Support at http://www.ca.com/us/services-support/ca-support/contact-support.html 
    • Request Type: CA Licensing
    • First Name:
    • Last Name:
    • Company Name:
    • Company Address:
    • Country:
    • City:
    • State/Province:
    • Postal/Zip Code:
    • Telephone Number:
    • Corporate Email Address:

  6. Fill out the following 'Details' information:
    • Problem Description: Require license for CA Test Data Manager-Fast Data Masker. (If you need a trial version or a specific license, you can add this information here)
    • Product Name: CA Test Data Manager-Fast Data Masker
    • Release: 4.2 (or whichever version you are currently using)
    • Type of Licensing: All Other Keys
    • Do you want to add an attachment: No. 
    • Please check and follow the instructions below: Check box for 'I'm not a robot'. 

  7. Click the 'Submit' button.

  8. You will get a message saying "Thank you for your submission. You will receive an email with case number 'xxxxxxxx'. The CA Customer Care team will be in touch shortly." Take note of this case number.

  9. A member of our customer care (licensing) team will create the offline license key you require and email you within 24 hours. 

  10. Once you have the license key, follow the next set of instructions. 

Apply the license:

Unlike applying the license activation key in Datamaker, you will not immediately be prompted to activate the license key in Fast Data Masker after opening the application.

  1. Launch FDM by either double clicking on the icon on your desktop, or going to C:\Program Files\Grid-Tools\FastDataMasker and double clicking on the GTMAPPER.exe.

  2. A ‘Connection Files’ window should appear. Connect to one of the saved profiles you have, or create a new one to connect to. This will include entering in the Connection Name, DBMS, Service Name, User Name, Password, Host Name, Port, and Default Schema of the database you are wanting to use for masking. Click the ‘Save’ button, and then the ‘Connect’ button.
  3. Fast Data Masker will only prompt you for the license activation key once you have run a masking job, so you will need to create a simple test mask. While on the ‘Masking’ tab, choose a table and column to mask, as well as what the masked data should be replaced with.
  4. In the ‘Options’ tab, you will set your masking preferences. For this scenario, we recommend running the masking job in 'Simulation' mode, meaning you will not actually be changing your data in the database. To do this, place the letter ‘n’ next to the ‘DBUpdates’ Line.

  5. Go to the 'Summary' tab to review all your masking rules and options that you have chosen.

  6. Click on the ‘Save and Run Mask’ button located at the bottom, right-hand corner of the screen. Here you will choose where to save your summary file, which is saved as a CSV file, and where to save your options file, which is saved as a text file.

  7. After saving these file locations, you should then be prompted with a ‘No valid license found. Do you want to enter a new activation key?’ message. Click the ‘Yes’ button.

  8. Paste the contents of the text file you were given for you activation key and click the ‘OK’ button.

  9. You may need to re-save and run the masking job again. If your masking job completes with no errors, then your license has been activated successfully.    

Alternative ways to apply the FDM license key:

If you are unable to open FDM at all, you can apply the license with this method:

  1. Close out of FDM.
  2. Go to C:\ProgramData\CA\TDM 
  3. Open the lic.dat file in a program like Notepad.
  4. Copy and paste the new FDM license key into the file. 
  5. Save the file.
  6. Launch FDM.
  7. A ‘Connection Files’ window should appear. Connect to one of the saved profiles you have, or create a new one to connect to. 
  8. Fast Data Masker will only prompt you for the license activation key once you have run a masking job, so you will need to create a simple test masking job. 
  9. In the ‘Options’ tab, you will set your masking preferences. For this scenario, we recommend running the masking job in 'Simulation' mode, meaning you will not actually be changing your data in the database. To do this, place the letter ‘n’ next to the ‘DBUpdates’ Line.
  10. Go to the 'Summary' tab to review all your masking rules and options that you have chosen. Click on the ‘Save and Run Mask’ button located at the bottom, right-hand corner of the screen. If your masking job completes with no errors, then your license has been activated successfully.

If you find that you do not have a lic.dat file in C:\ProgramData\CA\TDM, you can use this license application method instead:

  1. Go to C:\%AppData%\Roaming\Grid-Tools\FastDataMasker 
  2. Locate one of the connection files you use to connect to FDM. For example, connectSQLSERVER.txt.
  3. Open this file in a program like Notepad.
  4. At the end of the data in the file, enter on a new line 'License='.
  5. After the equal sign, paste the contents of your new license. It will look like: License=123456789ABCDEFG
  6. Save the file.
  7. Launch FDM.
  8. Connect to FDM using the connection profile that you just added the license key to.
  9. Run a simple masking test in FDM.
  10. If the job completed with no errors, then the license key has been applied successfully.
