Issue/Introduction

This article outlines the procedures for expanding storage capacity in the Virtual Appliance (vApp) environment when the root volume (/) reaches maximum capacity. It describes the use of the resizeDisk and addDisk aliases provided by the vApp management shell.

Environment

Virtual Appliance 14.5

Cause

The virtual appliance filesystem is formatted with an ext4 filesystem over LVM. When the logical volume (lv_root) in the volume group (vg_ca-vapp) is exhausted, additional storage must be allocated and the filesystem extended to restore system functionality.

Resolution

Choose one of the following methods based on the storage requirements and ESX administration capabilities:

  1. Option 1: Using resizeDisk (Extending Existing Disk)

    1. Coordinate with the ESX administrator to extend the existing virtual disk in the hypervisor.
    2. Access the vApp management shell and execute the resizeDisk command.
    3. The system will extend the partition, update the Physical Volume (PV) to span the new space, extend the Logical Volume (LV), and resize the filesystem.
    4. A system reboot may be required to register the partition changes.
  2. Option 2: Using addDisk (Adding New Virtual Disk)

    1. Coordinate with the ESX administrator to add a new virtual disk to the VM.
    2. Access the vApp management shell and execute the addDisk command.
    3. The system will create a new partition, initialize it as a new Physical Volume, extend the existing Volume Group (VG) with this PV, extend the Logical Volume (LV), and resize the filesystem.
