Detailed Description and Symptoms
There is a known problem with the SYSTEM chain not deleting the .idx files in the $AW_HOME/tmp directory 

Investigation

The .idx files are created in the $AW_HOME/tmp directory when a user opens/views a jobs output file in the Applications Manager (AM) client. In major implementations where tens of thousands of jobs are run and monitored on a daily basis this can create a large number of files in the 'tmp' folder.

Solution

This issue is documented as a Bug (Bug 25749 / SIS #145496) and is fixed in Applications Manager v8 SP5. 

Workaround:

Manually delete the .idx files older than 7 days in the 'tmp' directory to prevent a build-up of these files.
