SFTP connection to z/OS has transfers failing with "inputstream closed" or "channel is broken" errors.

Issue/Introduction

Error Message :
com.uc4.ftpjob.DataTransferException: channel is broken.
com.uc4.ftpjob.DataTransferException: inputstream is closed.

When attempting a file transfer with freeform commands such as: 
 

ls /+mode=binary 
ls /+lrecl=1028 
ls /+recfm=vb 
ls /+blksize=27998 
ls /+linerule=rdw 
ls /+space=cyl.15.25 

All transfers fail with a DataTransferException similar to the above error messages.
