HISRV gets CPC CONNECT ERROR after applying HWS / BCPii maintenance

Issue/Introduction

HISRV initialization fails with

Environment

HISRV 2.0

Cause

The HWICONN return code is 0xFFF, indicating an unexpected error. IBM doc describes the return code as follows: 

Meaning: System error. The service that was called encountered an unexpected error. The system rejects the service call. 

 

Action: Search problem reporting data bases for a fix for the problem. If no fix exists, contact the IBM Support Center.

 

This can happen when maintenance is applied to the mainframe hardware (HWS / BCPii) or possibly in other circumstances as well.

Resolution

Both HISRV and the HWS/BCPii need to be cycled:

1. Stop HISRV

2. Stop HWS/BCPii

3. Start HWS/BCPii

4. Start HISRV
