Issue/Introduction

How the volumes for which we get a message like:

TLMSII-CRASH-PROTECTED- 0 CAT4544I - CRASH PROTECTED - UNABLE TO PERFORM RETENTION message ?  Can it be scratched ?

Cause

The TLMSII.CRASH.PROTECT indicates that a job was executed and did not see a valid CLOSE or the job was ended for another reason and TLMS did not restore the original DSN as we are not sure if this is a valid tape or the CATTRS process the volume for which we get the message after it was opened or the volume is a edm volume and the owner is not correctly updated.

Resolution

The volumes can be scratched manually via the ISPF panels or by CATINQR using UPV vvvvv,SCRATCH=YES.

If the volumes are the EDM volumes but the the owner id is blank or another EDM which doesn't correspond to the definition entered in the  CTOEDMxx, we should first to update the OWNERID by CATINQR using

UPV vvvvv,OWNERID=edm1

and then scratch the volume manually or by CATINQR using

UPV vvvvv,SCRATCH=YES
