Issue/Introduction

When users attempt to log in or modify their passwords, the Identity Manager application server logs report a net.sf.easyjson.UnmarshallException: couldn't parse JSON error. This issue prevents successful authentication and operation completion.

Environment

Identity Manager 14.5

Cause

This error typically occurs in environments previously integrated with SiteMinder. The PasswordData attribute in the Corporate Directory contains legacy metadata that Identity Manager cannot parse. When Identity Manager attempts to read this malformed JSON string, the parsing process fails.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must clear the legacy PasswordData metadata attribute for affected users.

Warning: Perform this procedure in a test or development environment first. Always back up your directory before applying mass changes.

  1. Perform a Backup: Create a full backup of your directory store before proceeding.
  2. Identify Affected Users: Locate users exhibiting the JSON parsing errors.
  3. Clear the Attribute: Using an LDAP browser (such as JXplorer), locate the user entry.
  4. Remove Metadata: Locate the %PASSWORD_DATA% attribute and clear its contents.
    • Note: This attribute is used for password policy tracking and does not contain the actual user password.
  5. Verify Changes: Attempt the login or password modification again to verify that the error is resolved.
  6. Repeat: Apply these steps to all users reporting the authentication issue.
