Identity Manager: Installation is not starting. "An earlier version of CA IDM Is detected, but installer is unable to locate the installation files". Please uninstall the previous version and install again"

Issue/Introduction

When installing a new IDM 14.0 you receive the following error when starting the installer:

"An earlier version of CA IDM Is detected, but installer is unable to locate the installation files". Please uninstall the previous version and install again"

Environment

Windows allIdentity Manager 14.0

Cause

Even though the previous version of the IDM product had been uninstalled an entry in the Zero G deployment software we use for IDM was not removed by Windows.

Zero G is the leading provider of software deployment and delivery solutions for multiple platforms and technologies, including Windows Installer and the Windows .NET Framework, Linux, UNIX, NetWare, z/OS, and Mac OS X.  The entry needs to be removed.

Resolution

Navigate to C:\Program Files\Zero G Registry\.com.zerog.registry.xml .  It's a hidden file so you might need to turn on the 'Show Hidden File' option to see it. If you edit this file you should see that Identity Manager is probably still considered to be installed. 

What you should be looking for is something like the xml excerpt below:

Please back the file up into a different directory. Delete the file and rerun the IDM installer.
