Issue/Introduction

Should logs (DDLDCLOG area) and journals be FORMATted when upgrading?

Environment

All supported releases.

Resolution

Yes.

When upgrading CA-IDMS to a new release, it is good practice to FORMAT the DDLDCLOG area and all system journals with the FORMAT utility.

On most upgrades, when the layout of some of the involved records changes, the documentation will state that it must be done. However, even if no such requirement is documented, it is highly recommended to do so.

Furthermore, if during an upgrade, it is found to be necessary to return to the older release after an IDMS CV has been running on the new release for a period of time, the DDLDCLOG area and journals *must* be FORMATted with the old release.

This is due to the fact that the logs and journals will already contain records created with the new release and they may not be processed by the old release as expected, particularly when the involved records are being archived.
