S878 abends in IDMS REORG

Issue/Introduction

The IDMS REORG utility is abending with S878 - running out of opsys storage.

Environment

Release: All supported releases.

Cause

The REORG utility of IDMS uses several concurrent batch jobs in order to make the task of unloading and reloading a database run faster.

Due to the fact that it involves multiple similar jobs running at the same time, care should be taken when using any batch performance-enhancing feature which may require more z/OS storage.

Resolution

Options such as the SYSIDMS parms IDMSQSAM (and a high value for QSAMBUF#) and FILE_BUF, and the JCL parameter BUFNO are examples of this kind of feature which should be used with caution, or even avoided, for REORG jobs.
