Issue/Introduction

Installation of Search Service is failing, with no errors seen.  There is no entry in the Services listings (accessible via services.msc) for  “CA Service Management Search Server” presented after installing the 14.1 CP3 updates.

Cause

Certain Windows installations will prevent the Search Service from installing correctly if the install path chosen contains “()” characters, such as the “(x86)” string in “C:\Program Files (x86)”.

Environment

CA Service Management, Service Desk 14.1, CP3 install, Windows 2012, Primary Server or Background Server

Resolution

Install Search Services to a location that does not contain a “()” string in its path.  Ideally, do not install Search Services to “C:\Program Files (x86)” as Search Services is a 64-bit application and not meant to be placed in a directory meant to contain 32 bit applications.
