Issue/Introduction

By default, all Restore options under the Disk ISFP interface will fail if the user has no UPDATE access for the FILES data set.

Sysparm SMSUPDAT is used to control the updating of the DSNINDEX record in the FILES data set with the Last RESTORE Date (RESDT) after a RESTORE or RECOVER operation. If N is specified, this update is not done.

So which Restore options will work under the Disk ISFP interface with Sysparm SMSUPDATn for a user without UPDATE access for the FILES data set ?

Environment

Release:
Component: DISKOS

Resolution

  1. Option RESTORE - SUBMIT BATCH JOB TO RESTORE DATA SETS
works well with Sysparm SMSUPDATn as it bypasses the update of the DSNINDEX subfile of the FILES data set.

  2. Option RESTORE - QUEUE A REQUEST ONLINE does not work with Sysparm SMSUPDATn because to queue a request you need update access
to the FDS to add a record into the queue subfile RESTCMDS of the FILES data set.
So without the update access you cannot queue or defer a restore request.

  3. Option RESTORE - EXECUTE RESTORE REQUEST (VIA TSO)
This option does also not work with Sysparm SMSUPDATn because for this option you need update access to subfile DMSPARMS of the FILES data set
to control the number of concurrent dynamic restores in progress.

In summary: As sysparm SMSUPDAT is only used for the DSNINDEX subfile of the FILES data set, the only option where Sysparm SMSUPDATn does help is:
RESTORE - SUBMIT BATCH JOB TO RESTORE DATA SETS.
