Rally On-Premise Rally SaaS

Issue/Introduction

A user receives an error message when attempting to attach a file to a Rally user story or other artifact. This occurs when the file exceeds the platform's attachment size threshold.

Symptoms

When uploading a file, the following message is displayed: Maximum allowed file size exceed. Please select a file that is less than or equal to 50 MB in size.

Environment

  • Rally SaaS
  • Rally On-Premise

Cause

Rally has a hard-coded attachment size limit of 50 MB per file. It is not possible to increase this limit within the application.

Resolution

It is not possible to attach files that exceed the 50 MB limit directly to Rally artifacts. Follow these steps to provide access to larger files using a link:

  1. Upload the file to an external file server, cloud storage (e.g., SharePoint, Box, Google Drive), or a internal network share.
  2. Copy the direct URL or file path to the uploaded file.
  3. Navigate to the Rally artifact (User Story, Defect, Task, etc.).
  4. Paste the link into a rich text field such as Description, Notes, or a custom rich text field.
  5. Save the artifact. The link is now clickable for other users to access the file location.
