Issue/Introduction

The "VMWARE VCENTER SERVER PROXY LOST" alarm is asserted on all VMWare models in Spectrum

Environment

Release: Any
Component:

Cause

  • CAUSE 1:  There is a network\communication issue between the Spectrum Server and VCAIM Host.
  • CAUSE 2:  The vmvcAimStatVMTable .1.3.6.1.4.1.546.16.52.2.10.2.1.2 on the VCAIM server has reindexed the entire table.

When Spectrum does a vCenter discovery, it reads the vmvcAimStatVMTable from the VCAIM system. The vmvcAimStatVMTable is indexed using the vmvcAimStatVMUID attribute. When Spectrum creates the VMWare models, it copies the value of the vmvcAimStatVMUID attribute to the VirtualEntityInstance attribute id 0x12e51. Spectrum then uses the value of the VirtualEntityInstance attribute id 0x12e51 on the VMWare model to read the values from the vmvcAimStatVMTable on the VCAIM system to collect information about the VM and to determine the VM status.

When the vmvcAimStatVMTable on the VCAIM server has reindexed, the value of the VirtualEntityInstance attribute id 0x12e51 on the VMWare model is no longer an instance in the vmvcAimStatVMTable . Therefore, Spectrum can no longer obtain information about the VM from the vmvcAimStatVMTable and asserts the "VMWARE VCENTER SERVER PROXY LOST" alarm on the VM model.

Resolution

  1. Verify there are no network related communication issues or nightly batch jobs which may be impacting SNMP Communication between Spectrum and the VCAIM host.
  2. The vmvcAimStatVMTable being completely re-populated is a rare occurrence unless the XML cache file for the VC Host (located under C:\Program Files\CA\SystemEDGE\plugins\cavmvcaim) has been deleted.  Please contact VCAIM support if further clarification is required.
