Is iGateway needed for Portal, and if so, what does it do?

Resolution

iGateway is a short name for Instrument Gateway. The Instrument Gateway is a subsystem that listens for requests initiated by a user of Portal, directs the requests to the appropriate Instrument Sponsor, and processes the response from that Instrument Sponsor.

The iGateway performs three primary functions:

1. Serves as the single (multiplexed) access point through which the Portal accesses instrumentation on the machine where the iGateway is running
2. Serves as the dispatcher for access to instrumentation on that machine
3. Provides all inbound/external communication services between an Instrument Sponsor and Portal

If the iGateway is not running on a given machine, Portal will not be able to access the underlying instrumentation on that machine.
