With distributed data processing becoming the norm, customers often wonder if they can run Easytrieve on a mainframe platform and access Oracle on a UNIX platform. And, if this is indeed possible, how can it be accomplished?
Clients who are licensed for the Easytrieve base product and the Easytrieve Oracle Option can run Easytrieve on a mainframe platform and access Oracle on a UNIX platform. This can be accomplished via Oracle's gateways. An Oracle database on any node can be defined with an alias, so it can be used on any other node.
Users of Easytrieve for UNIX may also have a similar question. For example, does Oracle need to be on the same physical system on which Easytrieve for UNIX is installed? Easytrieve for UNIX and applications built with Easytrieve for UNIX are client applications that issue dynamic calls to Oracle libraries. Easytrieve Plus does not have to be on the same system as the Oracle server, but the Oracle client software must be present for these calls to be made to the server. Easytrieve does not know or care whether the Oracle server is local or a remote node.
