Issue/Introduction

What does a Return Value of 0 with a Socket Error Indicate?

Environment

XCOM™ Data Transport® for Windows

Resolution

Transfers may receive an error message such as XCOMN0298E unable to allocate remote tp, TXPI 211 socket connect error, rv=0. What does a return value of 0 mean?

A return value of 0 associated with a socket error frequently indicates a problem with a firewall.

How can I test if there is a firewall problem?

Here are some things to look at:

  • Transfers may fail in only 1 direction.

  • PING, Trace Route and Loopback transfers will work even with a firewall.

  • Other file transfer applications will fail (such as ftp).

Note: The firewall problem may be on the local or remote system.
