Resolution

To create a global view of your environment from one Unicenter SOLVE:Operations Automation (Unicenter SOLVE) region, you can link and synchronize all of your regions. This allows you to monitor resources on all connected systems from one screen. This article provides an overview of Unicenter SOLVE links, the link and sync operation, and tips on dealing with link problems.

Unicenter SOLVE regions are linked using INMC (Inter-Network Management Connection). INMC provides a data transport mechanism that supports the VTAM, TCP/IP, and EPS communication protocols. Facilities such as APPC (Advanced Peer-to-Peer-Communication) are available over INMC. This means that APPC can be performed over INMC even if the two regions are connected using IP.

We are all familiar with VTAM and TCP/IP; however, EPS (End Point Services) may be new to you. It is developed by the SOLVE lab and exploits the IBM XMS (Cross Memory Services) if the linked regions are within one system. If the linked regions are on another system, then it exploits the IBM XCF (Cross Coupling Facility). To view your link status, use the shortcut /INMC or enter the SH LINKS DETAILS command at the command (CMD) prompt.

When you synchronize with another Unicenter SOLVE region, it is important to realize that the region you are linking from will have its knowledge database or RAMDB erased before it is synchronized with the database of the region to which you are linking. If there are any system images or templates that you want to preserve, then you must transmit them away from the region before performing the synchronize operation.

Once you have synchronized, link management should be transparent. However, you may occasionally find problems with your links. A strategy for investigating link problems is to issue the following commands. You should also remember to view the SOLVE activity log for any messages by entering $LOG from any screen. For help related to a message in the log, highlight the message ID and press F1.)

  • SH LINKS DETAILS-Check the link status by issuing the LINK STOP=linkname, LINK RESET=linkname, and LINK START=linkname commands.

  • SH DOMAINS TYPE=DEFINED-Check domain details. If you are using IP, then ensure that the IP address and port number are the same as that defined in the sockets parameter (/parms) of the region with which it is being linked. If they are not the same, then you can delete the domain and redefine it using the DOMAIN DELETE and DOMAIN DEFINE commands. For help with any commands from command entry, enter the command and press F1.
