RC/Query for DB2 for z/OS

Issue/Introduction

As a RC/Query for DB2 for z/OS user you probably have to scroll to the right from time to time to see some of the information which is important to you.

This could be the column names in an index-column report or the record length in a table-list report.

Environment

Release: R20
Component: RCQ

Resolution

To see the most important information without having to use PF11 to scroll to the right, let's take a closer look at a feature called Customized Reports within RC/Query.

Customized Reports work for all list type reports (T-L, DB-T etc.), but not for frame reports, like Detailed reports.

  1. Type "profile" on the command line within RC/Query and press ENTER.
  2. Specify "Y" for SAVED REPORTS and PF3 back to RC/Query.
  3. Invoke a List report - for example Table List.....T/L
  4. Once the report is displayed, type "SAVE" in the command line and press ENTER.
  5. Type "REP" in the command line and press ENTER.
  6. If this is your first time within customized reports, only one item is listed. So, use Edit to select the required report. Only customized reports belonging to your userid will be listed.
  7. The selected report layout is now available for editing. You can:
    1. Change the COLUMN NAMES by overwriting them
    2. Xclude columns from being displayed
    3. Freeze columns
    4. Move a column Before/After another column
  8. Once finished editing, just PF3 back to the RC/Query report - and the new layout is displayed.
  9. The alternate method to change the default layout is to use the commands FREEZE, EXCLUDE etc. once the RC/Query report is displayed. Using the Customized Report feature, the desired layout will be used every time this report type is requested. It's not necessary to use the commands EXCLUDE, FREEZE etc. every time.

If the DEFAULT layout is required again, there are two choices:

  1. Type "CLEAR" and then press ENTER. The next report for this type will use the default report. Switching back to the customized report can be done by typing "REP" again and then selecting the customized report.
  2. Another way to get the default report is to go into the RC/Query profile (PROF) and specify "N" for SAVED REPORTS. The customized report (created earlier) will not be deleted - it can be activated at any time by specifying SAVED REPORTS "Y" in the RC/Query profile.

Below is an example illustrating the Table-List report layout before and after a customization. The example illustrates that "CREATEDBY" column has been excluded from the display, "N ROWS" has been renamed to "NUMBER OF ROWS" and has been moved up to be the third column. Column "REC LEN" has been changed to "RECLENGTH", column "COL CNT" has been renamed to "NUM-COLS" and moved up as the fourth column in the display.

If any error messages are displayed during the SAVE and REP commands, the most likely reason is missing product post install customization. Two tables must be customized in order for RC/Query customized reports to work properly:

PTI.PTRCQ_DESC_0200 and PTI.PTSQL_TEXT_0101

These DB2 tables are populated during the post install process via SQL in highlvl.CDBASAMP(RCQSQL).
