Issue/Introduction

Whenever a Catalog condense or Discard is attempted the following error message is received: VMBABN0026S VM:Backup system abend DEL008 occurred at 0006848C. VMBACKUP can be brought up with the COLD option but AUTOCAT cannot be run.

 

Resolution

This can be resolved by erasing the 4 INDEX files and files with a '$' sign in the filename and/or filetype on VM:Backup's catalog disk and reinitializing VM:Backup. This may take a while as VM:Backup will rebuild the index files when it restarts. This is often seen after a system clock change. z/VM system abends may create such problems when VM:Backup is in the middle of a catalog update.

IMPORTANT:

Do so only when no other way is available to solve a VM:Backup problem. Don't forget to BACKUP/COPY the catalog DISK before these actions. It may be needed by technical support to analyze the problem.
