Within Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP clicking on an attachment opens in a second window and a prompt is present to Open, Save and Cancel. If Save is chosen to save the file locally the second window remains open and is blank. This is Problem 170 which has an information solution of removing the extension of the file type that is displaying this behavior from the save_as_dialog_ext parameter in the NX_ROOT/bopcfg/www/CATALINA_BASE/webapps/CAisd/WEB-INF/web.xml:

<Param-value>eml, doc, zip, gz, tar, xls, rtf, ppt, pps, msg</param-value>

This has the side effect of removing the option to Save the File locally directly from the attachment link. The following alternatives can be used to save an attachment locally.

The first and simplest is to allow the Attachment to open in the new Browse window or other application and use the File / Save option to save the file locally.

The other option is to force Windows to always prompt for particular file types.

-Right Click on My Computer and Explore or Open.

-Click Tools, Folder Options and select the File Types tab.

-Locate the extension for the files you would like to download, DOC for example.

-Highlight that extension and click Advanced.

-Check the "Confirm Open after Download" option and Ok out of the Folder Options.

At this point the Open, Save, Cancel dialog will open for the DOC extension type allowing the download of the attachment without leaving the extra window open.

Unfortunately this setting is local to each users Windows install and only effects the extensions the users have specifically set this for in the Folder Options.
