Issue/Introduction

Description:

You are running ASM2 maintenance and you get this message:

ASMMN360 - IPC delete failed RC=20 RS=2 INF=0

There is a problem with your Journal file. You can fix the problem by rebuilding the file.

Solution:

You are running ASM2 maintenance and you get this message:

ASMMN360 - IPC delete failed RC=20 RS=2 INF=0

This particular set of error codes (20,2,0) indicates a problem with the Journal (JNL) file. The most likely cause of your problem is a bad record or other problem in the JNL file. To fix this problem you should rebuild (IDCAMs DEFINE) the JNL file. If rebuilding the JNL file does not fix the problem, please contact CA Support.

In case you are not familiar with the JNL file, here is a brief description. The Journal file serves as a backup to the IPC. It contains information required to recover the IPC if it is destroyed. When ASM2 has successfully backed up the IPC, it clears the Journal data set and writes a special record into the Journal which holds the data set name and volume information of the backup tape(s) just created. The Journal is used to record all update activity since the last IPC backup Utility M2PCBRU was run. It contains the data set name and volser of the most recently run IPC backup. Since the Journal file should be cleared on a regular basis, we recommend that you run an IPC backup at least once a week.

The rebuilding of your Journal file will not cause any problems with normal processing for ASM2, but it would be a wise to run the IPC backup utility (M2PCBRU) after you rebuild the Journal.
