Issue/Introduction

Description:

When installing the CA Database Command Center and the MDB, installation fails on the creation of the MDB database with an error message. The cause is that the OS disallows short path names. The solution provides two options.

Solution:

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about modifying the registry.
Before you modify the registry, make sure to create back up of the registry and ensure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem may occur.
For more information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, please review the relevant Microsoft Knowledge Base articles on support.microsoft.com.

The installation problem is caused by a hardening of the OS in regards disallowing short path names (8.3 format for example: Progra~1). This causes a problem with the default path names during the product installation.
You can do either of the following:

  1. Shorten the path names to their 8 character equivalents for folder names prior to installation.
Example: Progra~1 instead of Program Files

  2. Enter the registry and switch on the use of short path names:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\NTFSDisable8dot3NameCreation

  3. Change the value to the default from 1 to 0.
