Installation of the NSM Management Database (MDB) fails

Issue/Introduction

Description:

These errors occur because of problems creating the MDB database in Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL).

Installation of the MDB failS with errors like:

On Screen and in the Installation log in %TEMP%: The setup for component MDB has failed. Cause: An unknown error has occurred in API MDB_DO_SETUP while executing function main.

In the Windows Application log: Application Name: NSMSETUP.EXE, Fault Module Name: MSVCR71.dll, Exception Code: c0000005, Exception Offset: 0000a765.

Solution:

Check the following for a fresh installation:

  1. The database MDB should not exist in MSSQL.

  2. The user "nsmadmin" should not exist in MSSQL.

  3. There should not be an MDB installed in another instance of this database.

  4. The user running the setup program should be a local or domain administrator.

  5. If terminal services is being used, it should be in console mode.

  6. If a host file is being used for name resolution, ensure that the short name of the MDB server is defined before the fully qualified name, or that the Primary DNS suffix is defined.

  7. If also installing CA Insight for Distributed Databases, please see document: TEC523647: The installation of the MDB in CA NSM and MDB monitoring by CA Insight for Distributed Databases have conflicting requirements for the local hosts file when the system is not defined in DNS.

  8. Check the readme file included with the software for further requirements.

For an MDB upgrade, check the following:

  1. The database MDB should exist in MSSQL.

  2. The user "nsmadmin" should exist in MSSQL.

  3. The user running the setup program should be a local or domain administrator.
