The SMCHALLENGE cookie will be deleted once authentication succeeded and SMSESSION cookie is generated.

SMCHALLENGE is a SiteMinder cookie that is set in the course of BASIC authentication as an additional security precaution. The value of this cookie is initially set to YES, which causes the user to be prompted for credentials.

If the SMCHALLENGE cookie is still there, it means that either user was not authenticated or authorized.
