Issue/Introduction

Description:

How does a customer create a custom dataset in NetVoyant?
Is the creation of custom datasets supported?

Solution:

This is an example of how you can compile a MIB, create a dataset based on it and add some expressions that NV can use. It is the alternative to using an epack when the epack we need is not available.

This example below shows how to compile a PacketShaper MIB, create a dataset, and expressions to monitor when the web application shows web error messages like "error 403" to 100 users in 15 min.

First of all we have to compile the mib and the dataset for that mib, which you have created. The procedure is relatively easy. It can be found in the manual. The tricky bit is to select which MIB table within the MIB is the one we need to create our expressions later on. In this example, it is very important that you select classEntry as that is the table that contains the webresponse OID we are looking for.

Then add an expression

Then, you are looking to work with the table WebResponse4xx, which is the MIB tab, Packet shaper, classentry. Don't forget to enable that mib for polling, as you can see below.

Even though you want to work on that section of the MIB, you need to enable the whole MIB.

Now you can go to the alarm profiles, create one with a name and a description, and start adding the conditions/rules.

Here is, the alarm rule definition below

At this point you will have created the alarm, now we have to link it to the group we want to be alarmed on. Simply select the Assigned Groups tab and select your group. Don't forget to click Save.

Once you get to this point, you can continue from page 4 of the document called "Working with alarms and notifications in NV".
