When configuring or running virtual machine replications within Site Recovery / VMware Live Recovery (VLR) paired with vCenter Server 9.1, replication tasks fail with error status. Virtual machines display an error state, and the vSphere Client reports an invocation failure during managed object reference marshalling.
Symptoms:
In the Site Recovery UI under Replications, target virtual machines show a status of Error.
Task panel reports failures on Configure virtual machine for replication.
Recent task error notification reports:
A runtime error has occurred in the vSphere Replication Management Server. Exception details: Invocation failed with MarshallException: Missing value for managed object reference: 'https://<REDACTED_HOSTNAME>:8123/invocation failed with "com.vmware.vim.vmomi.core.exception.MarshallException: Missing value for managed object reference"'.
(vSphere Replication management server runtime error: Invocation failed with MarshallException: Missing value for managed object reference)
VMware Live Recovery (VLR) 9.0.2
VMware vCenter Server 9.1
VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1
VLR 9.0.2 is not compatible with vCenter Server 9.1 due to API schema mismatches and unsupported managed object reference structures in the VAMI/VMOMI layer.
Deploy and upgrade to VMware Live Recovery (VLR) 9.1.0 to establish version parity and schema compatibility with vCenter Server 9.1.
Verify Bill of Materials (BOM) & Compatibility:
Review the Broadcom Product Interoperability Matrix to confirm the required build alignment between VMware Live Recovery and vCenter Server 9.1.
Download VLR 9.1.0 Appliance:
Download the VMware Live Recovery 9.1.0 deployment bits from the Broadcom Support Portal
Deploy VLR 9.1.0:
Deploy the VLR 9.1.0 appliance in the target vCenter Server 9.1 environment.
Complete the initial network configuration and register the appliance with vCenter Server 9.1
Re-establish Site Pairing and Replication Tasks:
Re-pair the site connection and verify the Site Recovery extension registers cleanly without MarshallException errors.
Re-run or resume the virtual machine replication configuration tasks.
