Issue/Introduction

The VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) upgrade workflow fails during the Upgrade - THIRD_PARTY task.

The system UI reports the following RPM database progress messages: error: sqlite failure: CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS 'Packages' (hnum INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT,blob BLOB NOT NULL): disk I/O error error: cannot open Packages index using sqlite - No such file or directory (2) error: cannot open Packages database in /usr/lib/sysimage/rpm.

Environment

VCF 9.x
SDDC 9.1

Cause

The SDDC Manager root (/) partition has reached 100% capacity, preventing the local SQLite RPM database from executing required write operations and resulting in a disk I/O fault.

Resolution

  • SSH into the SDDC Manager appliance using the vcf user account and elevate to root privileges.

  • Execute the df -h command to verify the storage utilization of the root partition.

  • Identify and remove or relocate unneeded files (such as obsolete log bundles, temporary archives, or staged upgrade payloads) to reclaim storage space.

  • Once sufficient disk space has been freed, return to the VCF UI and retry the failed upgrade workflow.

Additional Information

Ensure that external storage targets (such as NFS mounts or external SFTP servers) are utilized for staging large upgrade bundles and maintaining file-based backups to prevent local partition exhaustion.
