Issue/Introduction

  • Dell PowerMax 2000/2500/8000/8500 (EMC), FC storage is being used
  • Without the Dell PowerPath/VE 8.2 plugin installed, the ESX host boot successfully
  • With the Dell PowerPath/VE 8.2 plugin installed, the ESX host experiences a PSOD approximately 15 seconds after boot is initialized.
  • Capturing a coredump (to file, partition, or network location) of the PSOD is unsuccessful
  • Error snippets of the PSOD:

Environment

VCF 9.1.1

Cause

  • The PSOD occurred because the emcp driver tried to release an invalid memory address in it's init_module() function.
  • The emcp driver (EMC PowerPath) is the base kernel driver for the Dell EMC PowerPath storage solution.

Resolution

Implement these steps:

  1. Confirm that a supported storage firmware version is being used by consulting with https://compatibilityguide.broadcom.com/
  2. Engage the hardware vendor directly for their assistance.
