Issue/Introduction

  • When upgrading the VCF Service runtime to 9.1.1, the following error appears under VCF Operations > Build > Lifecycle > VCF Management > Tasks:
    • Perform VCF Services runtime upgrade
      • After 21 retries, could not get task status due to network / server issues: I/O error on GET request for "https://example.local/api/v1/tasks/{task_id}": example.local.
      • An unexpected error occurred in steps vmsp_upgrade. Reference Code: 53678FEA. Please contact support with this reference code.
Details: Could not get task status from VMSP due to Network issues: I/O error on GET request for "https://example.local/api/v1/tasks/{task_id}":example.local
  • Product deployed with unsupported .local domains.

Environment

  • VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1
  • VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1.1

Cause

During system upgrades, network configuration files such as /etc/resolv.conf are rewritten by deployment scripts. Because .local domain structures conflict with standard unicast DNS and mDNS behaviours, search domain entries are removed or fail to persist across upgrade tasks, causing communication failures with vCenter Server. Guidance on transitioning away from .local TLDs are documented in Bridging the Local Gap: A Split-Domain Design for VMware Cloud Foundation Deployment.

Resolution

Domain .local is no longer supported.
To resolve the issue, perform a complete redeployment of the environment using a supported non-.local domain design.

  1. Reinstall the hosts: Preparing ESX Hosts for VCF or vSphere Foundation
  2. Clear the partitions (This is only required if vSAN is being used) Remove Partition From Devices
  3. Follow the documentation to deploy. Deploying a New VCF or vSphere Foundation Platform
