We have ICMP disabled in the network. How can we disable Spectrum from pinging models with ICMP?
There are two basic ways to disable Spectrum ICMP support:
1. On the individual model, setting the support_ICMP attribute id 0x11d3d to a value of No will prevent Spectrum from pinging the device associated with the model using ICMP. The value of the support_ICMP attribute can be changed in the Attributes tab of the model or by using the Attribute Editor. The documentation defines the support_ICMP attribute as follows:
Attribute ID: 0x11d3d
Determines whether CA Spectrum attempts to contact a device using ICMP when SNMP contact is lost.
2. ICMP can be disabled globally by setting the "ICMP Support Enabled" parameter in the Fault Isolation subview of the VNM model to "No". This will disable ICMP for all models in the Spectrum database.
The documentation defines the "ICMP Support Enabled" parameter as follows:
ICMP Support Enabled
Specifies whether an attempt should be made to contact a device using the ICMP protocol when trying to ascertain the fault status of the device. When the ICMP_SUPPORT attribute is enabled (set to TRUE), CA Spectrum looks at the setting of the ICMP_SUPPORT attribute at the device level. If ICMP support is also enabled on the device, CA Spectrum attempts to contact the device using the ICMP protocol. However, when ICMP_SUPPORT is disabled (set to FALSE), this setting takes precedence over the setting at the device level and prevents any attempt to contact the device using the ICMP protocol for fault isolation.
NOTE: When disabling ICMP at the individual model or globally, Spectrum will assert the "DEVICE HAS STOPPED RESPONDING TO POLLS" alarm on the model when SNMP contact is lost even if the device is still up and running and able to respond via ICMP. Spectrum will no longer generate the "MANAGEMENT AGENT LOST" alarm if the device stops responding to SNMP but is able to responding to ICMP.
