Issue/Introduction

This article details the procedure for remediating root password authentication failures across multiple NSX Manager nodes. When SDDC Manager reports root user disconnection, local password synchronization may require manual intervention using command-line interface tools to force a cluster-wide credential reset and restore API server communication.

Symptoms: Root password authentication failures occur on specific NSX Manager nodes within the cluster, while one node remains accessible. Key symptoms include:

  • Root password authentication fails on specific NSX Manager nodes within the cluster.
  • Root password authentication remains successful on one node only.
  • SDDC Manager dashboard indicates disconnected status for the root user account.

Environment

VMware NSX 9.0.1.0

Cause

Configuration issue resulting in password synchronization failure.

Resolution

  1. Log in as root to the appliance where login remains functional.
  2. Execute /etc/init.d/nsx-mp-api-server stop to halt the API server.
  3. Run passwd admin to reset the administrative password.
  4. Run passwd root to reset the root password.
  5. Run touch /var/vmware/nsx/reset_cluster_credentials to trigger a cluster-wide credential reset.
  6. Execute /etc/init.d/nsx-mp-api-server start to restart the API server.
  7. Remediate password settings within the SDDC Manager interface.
