Upgrading VMware ESXi from 8.0 Update 3i (Build 25205845) to 9.0.2.0 (Build 25148076) is unsupported.
If a direct upgrade is performed, the host enters an unsupported state during lifecycle management, causing concerns during environment updates (such as vCenter, Aria Lifecycle Manager, and Aria Operations Manager) or onboarding to VMware Cloud Foundation / VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF).

According to the Broadcom Product Interoperability Matrix (https://interopmatrix.broadcom.com/Interoperability), upgrade paths are determined by the release dates of the respective software builds:
Source Release (ESXi 8.0U3i): Released February 24, 2026
Target Release (ESXi 9.0.2.0): Released January 20, 2026
Because the source version was released after the target version, ESXi 8.0U3i contains newer code/patches than ESXi 9.0.2.0. Upgrading to an older code base (back-dating) is not a supported upgrade path.
Check Compatibility: Always verify planned upgrade paths on the Broadcom Product Interoperability Matrix before initiating host upgrades.
Assess Cluster State: Do not attempt further upgrades or modifications on hosts currently running in this unsupported state.
If Upgrade Has Not Yet Occurred: Hold the upgrade process until a target build newer than February 24, 2026 (or a post-9.0.2.0 patch/update) is available.
If Unsupported Upgrade Was Executed:
File a ticket with VMware Support (SDDC team) to evaluate cluster health and confirm whether a clean rollback or an in-place patch to a newer ESXi 9.x build is required.
Follow the SDDC team’s remediation guidance prior to proceeding with VVF onboarding or further Aria/vCenter lifecycle operations.
