Issue/Introduction

The Electronic Commerce Indicator (ECI) element represents the value as determined by the ACS. The ACS provides an ECI Value to the MPI (Merchant Plug-in) in cases where the Transaction status is "Y" (Success) or "A" (Attempts). For an Unavailable (U) and Failed Authentication (N) response from the ACS there is no ECI value received from the ACS. The Merchant has to submit an appropriate ECI value for the cases with “U” response. The issuing bank sends the ECI to the merchant after the customer has been authenticated. The merchant needs the ECI to continue with the authorization and settlement processes. These values will reflect the authentication status. Specific values are dictated by each Card Association.

What are the ECI Values for Visa and MasterCard transactions and what is the meaning of ECI 02, ECI 06, ECI 07 , ECI 01?

Resolution

As per protocol, an ECI value of 01 and 02 is used by MasterCard and ECI values of 05,06 and 07 are used by Visa.

For a successful authentication, MasterCard uses an ECI of 02 and in the same scenario Visa uses an ECI of 05. For all other transactions other than a successful authentication, MasterCard uses an ECI of 01 and for the same, Visa uses an ECI of either 06 or 07.

In the case of Visa, an ECI is returned in the PARes (Payer Authentication Response) from an issuing bank for:

1. A successful transaction (Status code = Y), ECI of 05.
2. An Attempted transaction (Status Code=A), ECI of 06.

For a failed authentication transaction (Status Code=N), we do not see an ECI value within the PARes. When a PARes status 'U' is seen, it indicates that the cardholder authentication could not be completed due to technical or other problems. For such a scenario MasterCard uses 01 and Visa uses 07.

In case of Attempts for MasterCard, an ECI is 01 is seen and the AAV (Accountholder Authentication Value) is present a PARes status of 'A' is seen if the Authentication could not be completed but a proof of authentication attempt was provided. The presence of the AAV from this response in a corresponding authorization message does not constitute a fully authenticated transaction and does not qualify for charge back protection under the global liability shift. When a PARes status of 'N' and 'U' is seen for MasterCard, it indicates that the cardholder authentication failed or Authentication could not be completed due to technical or other problems. In these cases, the ECI value is not seen.

Please note that an Attempted transaction/authentication will indicate a value of ECI of "6" for Visa.
