VCF Operations

Issue/Introduction

  • VCF Operations shows a higher Used Capacity under the license than the primary Licenses Used Capacity shown for the vCenter system.
  • The discrepancy may occur after hosts have been successfully removed from the vCenter inventory or if vCenter servers are updated.
  • Attempts to add new hosts fail with an error: To assign this license, it must have allocated capacity of #### cores.
  • When checking core usage in the license manager, you see the ESXi hosts duplicated.
  • Clicking the Update License button in VCF Operations does not reconcile the core count.
  • VCF Operations displays the following warning message: "Used capacity is higher than the allocated capacity for one or more of your licenses."

Environment

  • VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1.1
  • VCF Operations 9.1.1

Cause

This occurs when the VCF Operations Postgres database was located in a different directory than the upgrade anticipated, it will create a new empty database creating an inconsistency in capacity reporting.

Resolution

To remediate the license usage calculation, the VCF Operations cluster needs to be restarted:

  1. Log in to the VCF Operations administration UI at the https://<vcf_operations_fqdn>/admin URL as the admin local user.
  2. Take the VCF Operations cluster offline.
    1. On the System status page, click Take cluster offline.
    2. In the Take cluster offline dialog box, provide the reason for the shutdown and click OK.

  3. Wait until the cluster goes offline.
  4. Bring the cluster online.

After the workaround steps have been applied, and if any vCenter servers are down or disconnected from the License Server, their usage will not be reflected in the calculated total usage of the license, so the total usage shown in the vCF Ops Licenses table will be less than the combined usage of all vCenters assigned to this license in the vCenter table.
