This article details the steps required to update the vSphere Kubernetes Service (VKS) version and verify version compatibility prior to performing an upgrade.

Environment

  • VMware vSphere Kubernetes Service (VKS)

  • vSphere Supervisor Cluster / Workload Management

  • vCenter Server

Resolution

Steps for Verifying Version Compatibility:

  1. Check version comptability using the Broadcom Interoperability Matrix to confirm that the target VKS release is compatible with the active vCenter/Supervisor version and supported Kubernetes Releases (VKr).

  2. Determine the currently installed version using the vSphere client.

    1. Log in to the vSphere Client.

    2. Navigate to Workload Management > Supervisor Management > Services.

    3. Locate the Kubernetes Service tile to view the currently running version.

  3. Verify workload cluster version compatability for all deployed workload clusters are running a Kubernetes release within the supported path for the target VKS version using the use the official Broadcom Product Interoperability Matrix.
Important: Minor versions cannot be skipped during upgrades.

Step for Upgrading the VKS Version:

Step 1: Register the New VKS Version

    1. Log in to the Broadcom Support Portal and navigate to My Downloads > vSphere Kubernetes Service.

    2. Download the target version YAML package (e.g., x.x.x-package.yaml).

    3. In the vSphere Client, navigate to Supervisor Management > Services.

    4. Select the Kubernetes Service tile and click Actions > Add New Version.

    5. Upload the downloaded YAML package file.

Step 2: Upgrade and Activate VKS

    1. From the Kubernetes Service tile, select Manage Service.

    2. Follow the wizard steps to initiate the upgrade and activate the new version across the Supervisor cluster.

    3. Verify Status: Confirm that the Kubernetes Service tile reflects the new target version and displays a status of Normal or Healthy.
