Issue/Introduction

In the vSphere 9.x unified cloud platform architecture, VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF) 9.0 and VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.0 utilize a shared deployment engine (the VCF Installer). VVF is structured as a subset of the full VCF platform stack.

To transition an existing VVF 9.0 environment to a full VCF 9.0 deployment, administrators perform an in-place brownfield conversion, officially termed the Converge/Convert workflow, using the VCF Installer appliance.

This workflow retains existing vCenter Server and ESXi host configurations while deploying and integrating the missing SDDC Manager, NSX Manager, and VCF Management Services into a unified VCF Fleet.

Resolution

The Converge and Convert workflow in VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.x allows you to convert an existing non-VCF or VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF) environment into a managed VCF Fleet or VCF Instance without workload downtime or application migration. During this process, the VCF Installer validates the existing vCenter Server and ESXi host infrastructure, deploys missing management components (such as SDDC Manager and NSX Manager), and integrates them into the management domain of a new VCF platform.
