Issue/Introduction

  • In VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1, an FQDN-related failure during the VCF Management Components deployment left an orphaned Bootstrap Virtual Machine in the vCenter inventory, which was subsequently deleted manually.

  • The task "Deploy VCF Management Components" is then retried which fails at "Failed to register the appliance certificate with VCF services runtime".

  • /var/log/vmware/vcf/domainmanager/domainmanager.log in SDDC Manager will report the following:
FAILED_TO_ADD_APPLIANCE_CERTIFICATE_TO_VSP Failed to register the appliance certificate with VCF services runtime
Caused by: com.vmware.vsp.invoker.ApiException: java.net.NoRouteToHostException: No route to host

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1

Cause

Manually deleting the Bootstrap VM in vCenter does not remove the underlying VSP cluster registration/spec record that maps the MANAGEMENT domain to the deleted VM. Because this stale record persists, SDDC Manager incorrectly assumes the VSP cluster still exists at <VSP_runtime_FQDN>. Subsequent deployment retries and background jobs attempt to authenticate against this missing endpoint, resulting in a NoRouteToHostException failure.

Resolution

The issue requires manual cleanup of the following:

  • Orphaned LCM and VSP components within the SDDC Manager platform database.
  • Stale component records from VCF Operations via APIs.
