Issue/Introduction

This article addresses a scenario where ESXi hosts report an "Install Failed" status within the NSX Manager interface, specifically when errors indicate a failure to manage optional services.

Symptoms

  • ESXi hosts display an "Install Failed" status in the NSX Manager UI (System > Fabric > Nodes > Host Transport Nodes).
  • Error message: "Failed to manage NSX optional services on the host."
  • The error includes a unique connection error UUID.
  • "TEP IP Address: Not Set" status may appear for affected hosts. Note: If no virtual machines are running on the host, this status is benign and does not indicate a configuration failure.

Environment

VMware NSX 3.x/4.x/9.x

Cause

The "Install Failed" status is caused by a communication failure between the NSX Manager and the ESXi host. The NSX Manager cannot reach the host's management interface to initiate or realize the transport node configuration, triggering a failure to manage the necessary optional services.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:

  1. Verify Connectivity: Ensure that network connectivity exists between the NSX Manager and the affected ESXi host. Validate that required ports are open and that there are no firewall blocks interrupting management traffic.
  2. Trigger Configuration Resolution:
    • Log in to the NSX Manager UI.
    • Navigate to System > Fabric > Nodes > Host Transport Nodes.
    • Identify the affected ESXi hosts.
    • Select the host(s) and click Resolve.

Clicking Resolve forces the NSX Manager to re-attempt the configuration and realization workflow. Once connectivity is confirmed and the resolve action is triggered, the host configuration status should transition to "Success."
