Issue/Introduction

VMware NSX Manager upgrade fails (upgrading from 4.2.1 to 4.2.3.1). The UI displays the following error message: "Unexpected error while upgrading upgrade unit: Failed to put node [UUID] in maintenance mode. Please retry the operation after checking 'get group maintenance-mode status' CLI."

> get group maintenance-mode status: Shows Monitoring Group Mantenance mode status to be in Failed state

Environment

VMware NSX 4.2.1

Cause

The NSX Manager node fails to enter maintenance mode for the MONITORING group, leaving the node stuck in a MAINTENANCE_MODE_FAILED status.

Resolution

  1. Log in to the affected NSX Manager as root.

  2. Run the command get group maintenance-mode status and verify that the MONITORING group shows a failed state for the node.

3 .Restart the monitoring service by executing: /etc/init.d/phonehome-coordinator restart.

     4. Verify the maintenance mode is now enabled on the Monitoring Group.

      5. Retry the NSX Manager upgrade from the UI.
