Issue/Introduction

  • Administrators are unable to enable the vMotion service on vmkernels within VMware vSphere ESXi.
  • The vMotion service checkbox appears grayed out and cannot be selected when attempting to configure the service on additional vmkernels.

Cause

  • The vMotion service is grayed out on other vmkernels because it is already enabled via a dedicated vMotion TCP/IP stack on one single vmkernel.

Resolution

Follow the below workaround:

  1. Identify the existing vmkernel that is currently utilizing the dedicated vMotion TCP/IP stack.

  2. If the identified vMotion stack vmkernel is not in use, delete it.

  3. Create a new vmkernel utilizing the default TCP/IP stack and enable the vMotion service.
