Is it possible to manually enable Advanced Password Services(APS) on the 12.9 Policy Server?

Issue/Introduction

The documented method of enabling Advanced Password Services(APS) is to choose the feature during the initial installation process or later by running the Configuration Wizard.

Cause

However, in previous releases a file could manually be renamed to enable Advanced Password Services(APS) support. As of 12.9, this is no longer possible. 

Resolution

In 12.9, the documented steps of enabling it during the initial installation or running the Configuration Wizard needs to be performed at least once to obtain the necessary file.

When APS is enabled, this file is added to the Policy Server installation:

- (Windows) <siteminder install>\bin\smaps.dll

- (Linux) <siteminder install>/lib/libsmaps.so

 

Once the file is obtained, as long as the other Policy Servers which require APS are the same OS and SiteMinder version, the file can be copied to each system to enable APS without having to run the Configuration Wizard. Make sure the proper file permissions are maintained when copying the file. A restart is required for the Policy Server to recognize the new library.
