Issue/Introduction

When attempting to upgrade VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle to version 8.18.0 Patch 8, the upgrade process appears to finish, but upon rebooting the appliance, there is no login screen and the UI fails to load.

You may observe the following symptoms:

  • The appliance is online but remains stuck on version 8.18.0 Patch 7.
  • Applying standard service restart steps does not resolve the issue.
  • Logging into the appliance via SSH and running systemctl --failed displays multiple failed services, such as:
  UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUB DESCRIPTION
● rsyslog.service loaded failed failed System Logging Service
● syslog.socket loaded failed failed Syslog Socket

Environment

  • VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle 8.18.0
  • Upgrading from Patch 7

Cause

This issue is caused by silent corruption within the underlying Photon OS that occurred during the prior Patch 7 installation. Critical configuration and RPM files were not properly replaced, leaving the setup in a degraded state where it cannot recognize or apply subsequent patches.

Resolution

Because the OS corruption cannot be manually recovered, the appliance must be redeployed.

  • Deploy a new VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle appliance using the 8.18.0 General Availability (GA) build.
  • Apply Patch 8 (or Patch 9, if available and qualified) to the newly deployed appliance.
  • Import the required products into the newly patched setup.
