Troubleshooting Windows Guest OS Customization Failures Due to Template Snapshot Inconsistencies

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Windows VMs deployed from templates ignore Guest OS Customization specifications (hostname, network settings).
• The VM retains template values or defaults to APIPA (169.x.x.x).

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.x.

Cause

Corrupt or stale snapshot metadata within the template object prevents Windows Sysprep from correctly applying configuration injections.

Resolution

 

• Convert the template into a virtual machine in the vSphere Client.
• Navigate to the Snapshot Manager and ensure all snapshots are deleted.
• Power on the VM to verify OS state, then shut it down.
• Right-click the virtual machine and select "Convert to Template."
• Attempt a new deployment to verify that customization specifications apply correctly.
