Troubleshooting Pre-validation Warnings During VCF Operations 9.0.2 to 9.1 Upgrade

Issue/Introduction

When upgrading VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) Operations from version 9.0.2 to 9.1, the administrator may encounter a pre-validation warning message during the migration of Fleet Management data.

The message typically requests a review of the following prerequisites:

• Management Component Certificates: Verify that the CN field contains the FQDN and the SAN field includes all IP addresses and FQDNs of all nodes in the cluster. Ensure certificates are valid and not near expiration.
• Break Glass Accounts: Confirm that all break glass accounts are operational and password statuses are current.
• Network Configuration: Confirm that management components are correctly configured to use the management network.

Users may notice that VMware-generated certificates (such as the Fleet Manager certificate) do not include IP addresses, leading to questions regarding whether the upgrade can safely proceed.

Cause

 These messages are pre-validation warnings designed to ensure the environment is healthy before the upgrade begins. If the listed areas meet the required criteria, these warnings do not block the upgrade process.

Resolution

If the prerequisites are met, it can safely proceed with the upgrade directly through the VCF Operations administration interface.

1. Take VCF Operations snapshots before try the upgrade  Snapshot Creation in VMware Aria Operations
2. Log in to the VCF Operations administration interface.
3. Upload the VCF Operations 9.1 PAK file.
4. Initiate the upgrade.

The upgrade process manages the transition of lifecycle orchestration from the VCF Operations fleet management appliance to the VCF management services. It will automatically collect necessary inventory data and decommission the legacy fleet management appliance once the transfer is complete.

Note: If it encounter an error state (e.g., online_state.change_reason.upgrade_successful.migration_is_failed) following an upgrade attempt, this may be a false-positive. Setting the VCF Operations Cluster to Offline and then back to Online can clear the error state.
