VMware vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) Host Remediation Stuck at 0%

Issue/Introduction

• Host remediation tasks initiated via vLCM/VUM do not progress past 0%
• If attempt to cancel task is made, the cancel task hangs at 0%

Environment

• VMware vCenter Server 7.x
• VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

The local vmware-updatemgr service task state thread has hung or failed to process the task completion/progress event from the underlying vSphere API, leaving a stale task entry stuck at 0% in the vCenter task manager.

Resolution

 

• Open an SSH session to the target vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA) as root.

• Execute the following command to restart the vSphere Lifecycle Manager / Update Manager service:

  service-control --restart vmware-updatemgr
  

• Refresh the vSphere Client browser session and verify that the stuck remediation task has cleared from the Recent Tasks pane.
